Capacity of the system to maintain its structures and functions (or organization) during a long lapse of time.
This expression has been proposed by L. von BERTALANFFY (1969, p.81). It refers to the set of the steady processes which provide the maintenance of the system.
The subject has been enormously enriched first by classical topology and, more recently, by the concepts and models of catastrophes, fractals, dissipative structures, bifurcations and chaotic behavior.
